Lithuanian Library
for the Blind (LAB)

According to the Lithuanian Library Law (1995), the LAB was designated among the libraries of state significance.

The main LAB tasks are: to meet the literary and information demands of Lithuanian blind and visually impaired people; to contribute more actively to the educational, cultural and rehabilitational processes of the blind. In order to meet these tasks, the Lithuanian Library for the Blind forms a universal stock of a special literature for the blind, consisting of talking books, books in braille and print, periodical publications, music and electronic material.

The Lithuanian Library for the Blind is a publishing institution as well; it publishes talking books, periodicals, typhlological material in braille and print.

Besides central library in Vilnius, LAB has 5 branch libraries in different towns of Lithuania (Kaunas, Klaipeda, Panevezys, Siauliai, Ukmerge).
Total number of visually handicapped readers registered at LAB is 4409 (as of 2004). Book stock (as of 2004) is 449 050.

The LAB serves its readers in place, as well as trough travelling libraries, by organizing service delivery points for the blind at regional public libraries, at readers' home and by means of interlibrary and international library loans.
